Shenzhen Shangsha: A Kindergarten Oasis Amidst Urban Density

Zhubo Design's Innovative Approach to Early Education Spaces

Discover how Zhubo Design's Shenzhen Shangsha project reimagines the kindergarten experience, creating a light-filled educational haven in the heart of urban China.

In the bustling urban landscape of Shenzhen, Guangdong, Zhubo Design has crafted a beacon of innovation and architectural prowess with the Shenzhen Shangsha Kindergarten. Surrounded by residential high-rises, this project stands as a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful design, offering a visually and spatially engaging environment for young minds to flourish. The design team, led by Feng Guochuan and Gong Xiaowen, has meticulously crafted a space that not only serves its educational purpose but also acts as a cultural catalyst for the community.

The uniqueness of Shenzhen Shangsha lies in its response to the monotonous spatial experience often found in conventional kindergartens. By integrating diverse spatial levels, the design breaks away from the norm, guiding children through a rich visual journey. The kindergarten's structure, a frame shear wall system, supports the intricate canyon-like spaces that define the project. These spaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also serve as a container for light, where the interplay of sunlight and shadow creates a dynamic learning environment.

Technical specifications highlight the project's scale and ambition. Spanning over 5,525.99 square meters, with a total construction area of 7,304.38 square meters, the four-story building maintains a low volume rate of 0.89 and a modest height of 16.7 meters. The design team's expertise is evident in the realization of the project's complex three-dimensional folded image, achieved through precise construction techniques and materials.

Functionally, the kindergarten operates with 18 classes distributed linearly across three floors. The innovative corridor design alternates direction, resulting in double-height spaces that enhance the spatial experience. As children navigate these corridors, they encounter varying perspectives and spatial dimensions, from the expansive three-story canyon to the intimate single-story corridor.

Shenzhen Shangsha is more than an educational facility; it's a response to the lack of public space and community cultural facilities in Shangsha Village. By integrating a new kindergarten into the urban fabric, Zhubo Design addresses these community needs, providing a space that enriches the lives of residents and students alike. The project's recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2024 underscores its significance as a model of architectural excellence and social responsibility.

Completed in 2023, after a six-year journey from conception to realization, Shenzhen Shangsha stands as a beacon of design innovation. It exemplifies how architecture can shape the educational landscape, fostering environments that inspire and engage young learners. With its thoughtful design and multifaceted impact, Shenzhen Shangsha sets a new benchmark for kindergarten design in urban settings.
